A
trial Zonescan survey carried for Wessex Water in Trowbridge
produced a table of results as indicated below. This was carried
out in the afternoon after a previous full survey of the DMA indicated
this as an area of interest. |
The area was a council
estate just outside
the town centre. The pipe material was cast
iron, but no correlation had been carried out
previously as there is no pipe fitting at the end of the cul-de-sac. Surface sounding had highlighted a possible a leak location indicated by the red arrow on the map above. |

| Logger 100093 | Logger 100085 | Logger 100090 | Logger 100076 |
| Loggers:
100090,100093, and, 100085 all indicate a classic leak noise profile.
Logger 100076 indicates a very loud noise but also a wide profile.
This logger is the logger closest to the leak but is located on the
plastic meter blank in an MSM box located outside the second to last
house in the cul-de-sac. The plastic fitting is dampening the sound
and causing the wide profile.
Surface sounding confirmed the location of the leak coincided exactly with the middle spike of the “fork” shaped correlation result. The digital Zonescan logger recorded a noise of sufficient quality to correlate through a plastic fitting.

Despite this
potential problem fitting, logger 100076 recorded a noise signal
for correlation that, when cross correlated with the noise signal
recorded by logger 100093, produced the result on the right..jpg)
