A trial Zonescan survey carried for Essex &
Suffolk Water in Tilbury was commissioned to try and locate a burst
AC main that so far had given two results using a leading leak noise
correlator, both of which had been dry excavations.
The area surveyed was a council estate
near to Tilbury Docks on the north bank of the Thames.
25 loggers were deployed in the DMA with the main area of interest
centring on logger numbers:
100194, 100191, and, 100087. These loggers were arranged in a “T”
formation on a section of pipework within the DMA. The previous
excavations had been made between the locations of loggers 100194
and 100087.

Logger 100194: The logged results indicate leak noise at all three
loggers with the respective cross correlation results between the
loggers shown on the right. |
Logger 100087: The logged results indicate leak noise at all three
loggers with the respective cross correlation results between the
loggers shown right.. |
This is the result of the correlation of sound signals
recorded by loggers 100194 and 100087. It clearly shows no clear point
of correlation that would indicate the location of a leak. |
But this correlation of recorded sound signals between
loggers 100194 and 100191 clearly indicates the location of a leak
82.5m from logger 100194. This was confirmed by surface sounding and
the leak was repaired following a successful excavation. |
